Traditional Gagaku Performance in Kaohsiung

The music entourage have performed worldwide. Before coming to Taiwan, they performed in France. After the Taiwan tour, they will be performing in Poland and Austria.

The style of music is traditionally Japanese, but has Chinese roots.

Gagaku, the oldest form of classical music in Japan, was introduced into Japan from China. In 589, Japanese official diplomatic delegations were sent to China (during the Sui dynasty) to learn Chinese culture, including Chinese court music, Gagaku.

Kitanodai Gagaku Ensemble was established in 1982. The group promotes international cultural exchanges, educates and raises the aesthetic sensibilities of young people through Gagaku, a classical Japanese art form with a rich, thousand-year history.

The ensemble consists of three wind instruments, three percussion instruments, and taiko (drum) or dadaiko (large drum).

Gagaku also accompanies classical dance performances called bugaku (舞楽).
